UNITED STATES – The U.S. Department of War has announced a new military initiative dedicated to expanding the role of autonomous and robotic technology within the military structures of U.S. Imperialism. At a “State of the Force” address on September 30, the ultra-reactionary Pete Hegseth announced “Autowarcom,” a new command at the highest level, which will take part in exercising authority over all branches of the military.

Hegseth also announced “Project Meridian,” a transitional initiative to identify weapons for Autowarcom to use. Project Meridian is mainly led by tech executives Palmer Luckey and Elon Musk, both members of the monopoly bourgeoisie who have been loyal to the Trump government. In the same address, Hegseth announced a plan to reduce the number of officers and generals in the military by 20 percent, consistent with his mission to solidify sole control of the military by the most hardened reactionaries.

Autonomous capabilities and the integration of LLMs are attractive to the Department of War leadership as a means of saving costs and as an attempt to keep pace with the use of LLMs by other militaries, in particular Russia and social-imperialist China . The U.S. military has already been using LLMs and autonomous weapons in its aggression, with drone strikes becoming an infamous method of murder by U.S. Imperialism under former Democratic President Barack Obama. Autowarcom is a another step towards centralizing these tactics throughout the military while simultaneously reducing the associated costs. With the proposal by the Trump administration to increase the military budget by 50% to $1.5 trillion, the Department of War is preparing for a global imperialist war of redivision.

The drive by the Department of War to integrate LLMs into its command structure is also related to defeat of U.S. Imperialism in its aggression against Iran. The attempt by U.S. Imperialism and the Zionist Entity to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program, overthrow the current government, and install a system more amenable to its semi-colonial aims backfired. This effort has instead strengthened the Iranian people’s opposition to U.S. Imperialism and its puppet states in the region, making them even more willing to openly confront them than before.

The recklessness of the Trump government has been a major factor perpetuating the current crisis. After Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action during his first government, the U.S. began efforts in 2025 to negotiate a new agreement on terms more favorable to itself. Nine rounds of negotiations throughout 2025 and 2026 all failed, leading the U.S. to turn to open military aggression against Iran. Iran’s response of closing the Strait of Hormuz dealt a severe blow to the global energy supply, reverberating throughout imperialist economies. The U.S. swiftly returned to negotiation, coming to a preliminary agreement and a ceasefire in June of 2026, this deal failed to last even a month.

Unquestionably, the period of Palestinian resistance opened by Operation Al-Aqsa Flood and the subsequent escalation in genocide by the Zionist Entity underlie the crisis, while Iran’s support for the Palestinian resistance and Ansar Allah in Yemen remains another major factor. The war of aggression against Iran and the genocide of Palestinians have altered the balance of forces in the world by bringing millions into the movement against U.S. Imperialism and producing a new generation of revolutionaries across the world who have learned first-hand that U.S. Imperialism will never abandon its genocidal aims until it is decisively overthrown.

The Department of War’s Autowarcom must be understood within this wider crisis of U.S. Imperialism. Faced with increasingly costly wars, determined resistance, and the limits of its existing military structure, the Department of War is attempting to reorganize its machinery of aggression around autonomous weapons, robotic systems, and LLM assisted command in order to reduce costs, accelerate military operations, and preserve U.S. power in future wars of redivision. Autowarcom therefore represents more than another technical modernization project: it is an attempt by U.S. Imperialism to adapt its military apparatus to the defeats, contradictions, and resistance confronting it across the world.
