MICHIGAN – Reformist and pro-capitalist candidate Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Senate race, defeating reactionary Republican Mike Rogers El-Sayed’s alignment on the campaign trail with genocidal Zionist politicians, former President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris on the campaign trail.
During his Senate campaign, Abdul El-Sayed built a large part of his early campaign on “progressive” messaging that resonated with some younger and disaffected sections of the masses. In the beginning of El-Sayed’s campaign, criticism of the Zionist Entity came up with regularity, as part of a broader platform that included many of the typical social-democratic reforms. His initial stances on these issues garnered support from chapters of the DSA alongside independent “progressives” and other elements of the opportunist “left.” Tied to support from self-declared “democratic-socialists,” El-Sayed portrayed himself as an ally for “progressive” movements.
The Democratic Party campaigned aggressively against El-Sayed during the primaries. However, shortly after his narrow win against his openly Zionist and reactionary opponent, Haley Stevens, the party apparatus was quick to switch tactics and unite behind him. His positions, which in appearance seem at odds with the rest of the party, are in reality one element of the larger trend of growing social fascism within the Democratic Party, intended to weaken the burgeoning revolutionary movement, reform the Democratic Party, and stabilize the deteriorating capitalist-imperialist system domestically.
In the wake of his primary win, El-Sayed’s rhetoric against the Democratic Party apparatus softened. El-Sayed loudly proclaimed, “I’m a capitalist,” and continues to stand firmly on the side of capital, criticizing the inevitable consequences of the rule of monopoly finance capital as “corporate socialism.” This is an active attempt to direct progressive sentiments directly back into capitalism, to co-opt young and indignant members of the masses away from revolutionary politics and towards the loyal service of the genocidal capitalist-imperialist Democratic Party.
The latest expression of this trend in the party was shown by former President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris signing on to campaign for and with El-Sayed. Both of these politicians have extensive histories of supporting the Zionist Entity and U.S. Imperialism and have served in governments that slaughtered U.S. citizens and members of the international masses alike. El-Sayed painted over these inconsistencies as much as possible to push for a win in the election and gather further support from the party apparatus. Obama and Harris, as spokespeople for the core of the Democratic Party, seek to align themselves cosmetically with the direction that progressive-minded people are heading to limit the scope of the policies that are embraced and to present the Democratic Party as “progressive.” Support for this strategic alliance seeks to channel the pro-Palestine movement back into U.S. Imperialism and Zionism, aiming to use modest reforms to strengthen and solidify U.S. Imperialism and the Zionist Entity on more palatable terms. Their end goal is to make genuine reform seem possible and attractive and to bring the burgeoning revolutionary anti-Zionist movement back into the treacherous clutches of reformism.
Essential to this strategy is the presence of the loud and vulgar Zionist candidate Haley Stevens, whose exclusion from the El-Sayed campaign following divisive criticism serves as a symbol of the unabashed Zionist trend within the Democratic Party. With Steven’s public meltdown and endorsement of Rogers, El-Sayed and those who have endorsed him, including ultra-Zionist Senator Chuck Schumer and Zionist Bernie Sanders, are able to appear less genocidal and imperialist than they are. Their liberal Zionist reformism now appears to be the obvious choice in a false dichotomy between two competing brands that both ultimately end with the legitimization of the occupation of Palestine. A similar trend can be seen in how the mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, used the grotesqueness of his opponents to launder political decisions that have directly served Zionist interests such as the continued retention of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the repression of hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists, and the continued sale of stolen Palestinian land in New York City.
The masses, if they are to achieve liberation, must oppose reformist fraudsters such as El-Sayed and Mamdani, and the constitutional illusions they serve. The tactic of the capitalist class to bait the pro-Palestine movement into State bodies, defanged opportunist organizations, and the NGO complex is directly involved in perpetuating the genocide in Palestine. The reformist politicians know their position is to hold the masses in stasis. Their unity with open génocidaires only makes plain the reality that the masses must thoroughly reject the maneuvers of opportunism and reformism in the all-out struggle against U.S. Imperialism and its Zionist outpost in West Asia.
