WASHINGTON – Approximately 400 masked members of the fascist organization Patriot Front marched through Washington, D.C., on July 4, the 250 year anniversary of the foundation of the United States, chief enemy of the world’s peoples.
Moving in military formation through streets and Metro stations, the fascists carried U.S., Confederate and Patriot Front flags while chanting, “Life, liberty, victory!” and “Reclaim America!” Dressed in matching navy shirts, khaki pants, white masks and tan hats marked with fascist symbols and slogans, the column advanced with little meaningful interference before voluntarily dispersing.
The march was an organized fascist provocation, and the ease with which Patriot Front operated carries political significance. Its purpose was to terrorize the masses, recruit new members, and test how freely an openly fascist formation could seize public space in the capital of U.S. Imperialism. This stands in stark contrast to the repression directed against the movement for Palestine, opponents of militarization, and revolutionary activists such as the Prairieland Defendants and the Midwest 8, exposing once again that the state treats fascist intimidation with tolerance while meeting resistance from the oppressed with surveillance, prosecution, and prison.
Patriot Front was founded in 2017 by Thomas Rousseau after the collapse of Vanguard America. Vanguard America dissolved following the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which culminated in the murder of anti-fascist demonstrator Heather Heyer. Patriot Front was constituted through a rebranding of open Neo-Nazism. Explicit Nazi imagery was replaced with colonial shields and symbols, Roman fasces, stars, eagles, altered U.S. flags, and manicured uniforms. The outward form changed, while the class content and program remained.
Patriot Front, which claims to have members in every state except Hawaii, openly declares that the United States belongs to those it defines as members of the “European race,” calling for the restoration of the traditions of European settlers. Its political vision is an open dictatorship rooted in the colonial foundations of the United States.
Capitalism strips millions of people of stability, community, security, and control over their lives. Fascism takes the anger produced by these conditions and redirects it against oppressed nations, migrants, national minorities, women, and queer people. Rather than exposing the domination of monopoly capital and the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, fascism constructs the oppressed as enemies and objects of conspiracy. Fascist demagogy conceals the actual source of social decay and directs the exploited against one another. Its essential function is the preservation of the state, the capitalist system, and the ruling class under conditions of deepening crisis and decay.
Rousseau’s speech after the Washington march exposed this substance. He referred to “Jewish cabals,” “foreigners” who had supposedly invaded the country, “Anglo Saxon blood,” and “ethnic replacements.” His language was deliberately grandiose and vague, filled with references to destiny, humiliation, rebirth, sacrifice, and obedience. Behind this theatrical language of heroism and renewal lies a program of intensified exploitation, national oppression, war, and state terror.
The reactionaries and bourgeois media responded to the march by promoting the absurd claim that Patriot Front was staged by the Democrats or “Antifa.” The claim serves a clear purpose. It denies the organic connection between reactionary politics and organized fascism. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum defended the march on the grounds of “free speech” and a part of “messy” democracy.
The Democrats responded similarly in form but identically in substance, echoing their Republican counterparts. Democratic Rep. Al Green stated, “I want them to have free speech.” The ruling class invokes free speech selectively. Fascists are permitted to march through the capital while opponents of genocide, deportation, police murder, and imperialism are hunted and imprisoned.
The July 4 march was one manifestation of the advancing fascistization of the U.S. regime, a process rooted in the deepening crisis of U.S. Imperialism and the bourgeoisie’s movement toward more centralized and openly coercive forms of rule. Fascistization does not depend upon the immediate abolition of the already farcical elections or the formal end of bourgeois democracy. It develops through the expansion of executive power, political prosecutions, mass detention, anti-communist measures, attacks on oppressed nations, militarization of society, and the cultivation of organized reactionary forces.
Bourgeois democracy and fascistization may coexist for a prolonged period. Parliament, elections, and liberal legality remain while their substance is progressively hollowed out. The Democrats play an essential role in this process. They present themselves as defenders of democracy while enacting the same austerity, and strengthening the same police, prisons, surveillance agencies, and imperialist institutions used by the Republicans. They join the reactionaries in attacks on communism, such as when 86 House Democrats voted alongside the entire voting Republican caucus in November 2025 to denounce “the horrors of socialism.”
The July 4 march comes as Trump has condemned the “communist menace” in speeches at Mount Rushmore and on the National Mall, declaring “you can be a communist, or you can be a patriot” and casting communism as a “mortal threat” to be “vanquished.” Twelve days later, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller convened representatives of 67 countries at the State Department to launch a coordinated campaign against what they termed “far-left political terrorism,” with Rubio pledging to “dismantle these networks brick by brick.”
Miller, in a Goebbelsian evocation, cast his enemies as physically ugly and deformed, abnormal and unfit for society, telling assembled diplomats from 67 countries that at “violent Antifa demonstrations” not one demonstrator “looks like a normal person” and that each is “scarred” in body and appearance. He described the left as a festering “cancer” the world must “root out.”
The Patriot Front column moved through Washington under the political cover of this rhetoric, which fuses anti-communism, anti-migrant reaction, and the criminalization of dissent into a single ideological offensive from the highest offices of the U.S. regime.
Four hundred masked fascists do not constitute a mass movement; their display depended upon the absence of organized opposition and the tacit approval of the regime. Fascist formations grow where the masses remain disorganized, where reformism diverts struggle, and where revolutionary leadership is absent.
In response to this foul demonstration, to the rising tide of fascism, militarization, and destitution, the organized multinational proletariat, in alliance with the oppressed nations and all those subjected to bourgeois rule, must be built into forces capable of confronting reaction, defending themselves, breaking the hold of reformism and opportunism, overthrowing the system which generates fascism, and treading up the path of socialist revolution and national liberation.
