Comrades in Richmond, Virginia were made aware that the Byrd Theater, in collaboration with the Richmond International Film Festival, was screening No Way Back: The Reality of Gender Affirming Care. You might have noticed that we chose not to use its updated name in introducing the movie.  “Affirmation Generation” is not just the title of the movie, it’s a mask of neutrality hiding the lying face of a fundamentally bigoted piece of art. 

No Way Back is an agitational propaganda film designed to plant the seeds of anti-trans hatred that can, under the right circumstances, bloom into real world chauvinistic attitudes that lead to structural and physical violence against real people. It follows 6 individuals who detransitioned after receiving gender affirming care. The message of the movie is that, because 6 individuals regretted receiving gender affirming care, gender affirming care should be banned for all trans youth.

The filmmakers may stare at us scandalized. “How could you claim we want to ban care for all trans youth! We just retweet people who do! We care about the thoughts and feelings of gay people! That’s why we promote the only reliable source, widely trusted by gays, Gays against Groomers!” This film can pretend that it is not a piece of fascist propaganda meant to encourage the genocide of trans people and trans youth in particular, but the filmmakers will one day find themselves trying to wash the blood away from their hands, and like Lady Macbeth, they will find it doesn’t wash away easily. And this heinous piece of art was allowed to be screened in the middle of a day of legitimate documentaries.

We call for the decisionmakers responsible at the Byrd Theater and the Richmond International Film Festival to resign for allowing this movie to be screened.
