East Garfield Park – Shortly before 6:00 PM on March 9, 2026, on the 800 block of Homan and Chicago Ave., Chicago police officers chased and cornered a man in a vehicle fled from them down Chicago Ave, and then fired into the car six times after it had become trapped between a Chicago Transit Authority bus and a flock of CPD squad cars, killing him.

Video of the shooting was captured by witnesses on scene, which clearly shows the vehicle becoming cornered after the currently unidentified man was chased by police into the busy intersection of Chicago and Homan Ave., causing it to collide with a bus full of passengers. The footage shows officers approaching the vehicle on foot, with one officer yelling out “Get out of the car! I’ll fucking shoot you!” while another officer attempts to smash into the passenger side window of the car. Shortly thereafter, the car moved in a further attempt to free itself from its pinned position, and CPD fired six shots into the vehicle despite onlookers yelling out “Don’t shoot!” and identifying that the man in the vehicle was unarmed.

“You didn’t have to do that shit, man!” An onlooker spoke out in condemnation following the barrage of CPD bullets.

Members of People’s Defense Chicago spoke to their Garfield Park neighbors immediately following the shooting. While CPD has since claimed that the individual in the car initiated the pursuit by firing upon them, local witnesses have unilaterally denied this to be the case, stating the accusation to be outright lies on the part of CPD.

A resident of the neighborhood compared the actions taken by CPD to the shootings of Rene Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by ICE/CBP, with police overtaking, encircling, and pinning the vehicle before using the man’s attempts to escape as pretext to unload their weapons into the car—a scenario which also bears an unmistakable resemblance to the shootings of Silverio Villegas Gonzalez and Marimar Martinez in Chicago by immigration agents earlier last year. “They all think they can just go around killing whoever they want,” the same resident said.

Another neighbor pointed out that she had recently tried to call the police because she had heard a woman screaming for help outside her apartment building, but they never responded. “But they have time to kill people,” she went on to say.

State terror has many heads, but its methodology remains the same. CPD, ICE, and CBP all rely on brutality, lies, and intimidation to perpetuate violence on our streets. Residents of East Garfield and West Humboldt Park, and people across Chicago, have had enough of CPD’s lies manufactured as a pretext for the ongoing violence they inflict on our communities.

End CPD Terror!
